Meridian Acupoint Massage & Daily Diet Guide for Strengthening the Spleen, Stomach, and Eliminating Dampness

Meridian Acupoint Massage & Daily Diet Guide for Strengthening the Spleen, Stomach, and Eliminating Dampness

Due to Hong Kong's humid climate, the spleen and stomach are prone to being overburdened by dampness. By pressing specific acupoints, adjusting the eating sequence, and selecting the right ingredients, you can effectively strengthen the spleen, resolve dampness, and boost metabolism.

I. Essential Acupoints for Strengthening Spleen and Removing Dampness

Practicing daily massage on the following four acupoints can effectively regulate the spleen and stomach and promote water metabolism:

Zusanli Acupoint (Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming)

Location: Four finger-widths below the outer knee eye, about one inch lateral to the tibial border.

Benefits: "Regularly retaining Zusanli keeps the abdomen and belly peaceful." It is the primary acupoint for regulating the spleen and stomach, strengthening spleen and stomach functions, supplementing Qi, and eliminating fatigue.

Sanyinjiao Acupoint (Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyin)

Location: Four finger-widths directly above the tip of the medial malleolus, in the depression on the posterior border of the tibia.

Benefits: The intersection point of the Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyin, Liver Meridian of Foot-Jueyin, and Kidney Meridian of Foot-Shaoyin. It treats spleen and stomach weakness, edema, and heaviness in the limbs caused by dampness obstruction. (Contraindicated for pregnant women)

Yinlingquan Acupoint (Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyin)

Location: On the medial side of the lower leg, in the depression below the medial condyle of the tibia.

Benefits: The He-Sea point of the Spleen Meridian, it is a major "dampness-removal acupoint" in the body. It strengthens the spleen, regulates Qi, promotes diuresis, and reduces swelling, making it especially suitable for improving lower limb edema.

Fenglong Acupoint (Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming)

Location: At the midpoint of the line connecting the external malleolus tip and the knee eye, about two finger-widths lateral to the anterior border of the tibia (in the thick muscle area).

Benefits: Known as the "premier acupoint for resolving phlegm and removing dampness," it strengthens the spleen, resolves phlegm, and unblocks meridians, showing remarkable efficacy in improving damp turbidity in the body.

II. Dietary Guide for Strengthening Spleen and Removing Dampness

1. Golden Eating Sequence (Blood Sugar Control & Reduced Burden on Spleen and Stomach)

Adjusting your meal sequence helps stabilize blood sugar and reduces the digestive burden on the spleen and stomach:

Step 1: High-Fiber Vegetables (Consume non-starchy vegetables first to prime the gut).

Step 2: Quality Protein (Such as fish, chicken, and eggs).

Step 3: Complex Carbohydrates (Eat staple foods last to prevent rapid blood sugar spikes).

2. Recommended Ingredients for Removing Dampness

Incorporating the following spleen-strengthening and dampness-resolving ingredients into daily cooking or soups can be beneficial:

Strengthening Spleen & Promoting Diuresis: Rice beans (adzuki beans), hyacinth beans, raw Job's tears (cooling in nature; cooked Job's tears can be chosen for those with a cold spleen and stomach deficiency), Poria (茯苓), Chinese yam (Huai Shan), lotus seeds, and Gordon euryale seeds (芡實).

Regulating Qi & Resolving Dampness: Tangerine peel (Chenpi; promotes Qi circulation and strengthens the spleen, especially suitable for those with heavy dampness and prone to abdominal distension) and Atractylodes (白朮).

3. Daily Dietary Recommendations

Warm Diets: Traditional Chinese medicine believes that "the spleen loves warmth and dryness while disliking dampness." Try to minimize raw and cold salads, iced drinks, or frozen treats to avoid damaging spleen Yang and worsening dampness retention.

Moderate Addition of Good Fats and Fiber: Such as adding an appropriate amount of flaxseeds to yogurt or protein milkshakes to aid bowel movements and maintain metabolic balance.

Light and Low-Oil: Limit rich, greasy, and heavy foods (such as fried and sweet items) to prevent generating damp-heat and aggravating the feeling of physical heaviness.

Ingredients for Detoxification, Dampness Removal, and Metabolic Regulation

1. Turmeric — Warming and Unblocking Qi and Blood, Boosting Metabolism

Dampness-Removal Principle: Turmeric is warm in nature, pungent and bitter in taste, and enters the liver and spleen meridians. Traditional Chinese medicine believes it promotes Qi circulation, invigorates blood, and unblocks meridians to relieve pain. Although it is not a direct diuretic dampness-removing herb, its warm nature helps improve dampness retention caused by poor Qi and blood circulation or a cold constitution (such as tight meridians and heavy limbs caused by poor circulation).

Modern Nutritional Perspective: Curcumin possesses potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, helping to promote metabolism and liver detoxification, which greatly benefits overall metabolic health.

2. Moringa Leaf — Nutrient-Rich, Promoting Diuresis and Reducing Edema

Dampness-Removal Principle: In traditional herbal applications, moringa leaves are considered to possess certain diuretic, swelling-reducing, and heat-clearing effects. Rich in minerals such as potassium and calcium, moderate consumption helps regulate fluid and electrolyte balance in the body, helping to improve mild edema caused by water retention.

Nutritional Value: Known as the "Miracle Tree," moringa leaves are rich in multiple vitamins, amino acids, and antioxidant components, helping to replenish nutrients, boost vitality, and support gut and metabolic functions.

3. Orange Jasmine (Jiuliuxiang) — Regulating Qi and Relieving Pain, Primarily for External Use (No Direct Dampness Removal)

Dampness-Removal Principle: Orange jasmine is warm in nature, pungent, and slightly bitter. Its primary functions are regulating Qi to relieve pain, invigorating blood to disperse stasis, and providing anesthetic pain relief (commonly applied to stomachaches, rheumatic arthralgia, or traumatic injuries), along with good antibacterial and swelling-reducing external benefits.

Conclusion: It is not a primary oral ingredient for "clearing dampness and promoting diuresis." With its pleasant fragrance, it is more commonly used for regulating Qi or relieving pain.

If modern city dwellers want convenience, they can directly take nutritional supplements. I personally take this "trio," which contains the above ingredients to effectively activate metabolism, detoxify, remove dampness, regulate the spleen and stomach, reduce fat, and build muscle.
